Lien releases and out-of-state registration

Paper Trail ·

Two paperwork tasks generate most of our reader distress mail. First, lien releases: if the title shows a lienholder, you need a signed release or a payoff letter before money moves — a verbal “it's paid off” is worth nothing at the DMV. Second, out-of-state purchases: check your state's inspection and emissions requirements before buying, since a car that is legal where it sits may need work to register where you live. Both checks cost nothing but a phone call and save weeks.
